Am I the First Starlink User in Germany?

I was recently surprised by a notification from Starlink: my area is available for beta testing. Here's what happened next.

I was recently surprised by the notification coming from Starlink: my area will be available for beta testing!

So with no delay, I ordered my Starlink package — and here it is.

My Starlink package

Well, to be honest this was already last month. After setting this up, I already had the chance to test it a lot.

First Impressions

I made some speed tests and used it for my daily work (mainly Teams conferences). My verdict: the speed is stunningly good, the uptime is solid, but when it comes to video conferencing I sometimes experience short connection drops.

The speed history over the past 14 days showed consistently high throughput — far above what I had with my previous connection in a rural area.

Why It Matters

Working from a home office in an area with limited infrastructure, bandwidth has always been a bottleneck for video conferencing. Starlink changes that equation entirely.

Regardless of the occasional drop, I'm really glad to be able to do video conferences without worrying that my bandwidth will be a problem. That's a meaningful change for anyone working remote from outside major cities.

If Starlink continues to expand in Germany, it could be significant for rural digital infrastructure — which is still severely underserved compared to urban areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What internet speeds did Starlink deliver in Germany during the 2021 beta?+

During the 2021 beta, Starlink delivered download speeds typically between 50–200 Mbps with latency around 20–40ms — considerably better than expected for a satellite connection, and a significant improvement over rural DSL alternatives.

How does Starlink compare to fibre broadband?+

Starlink's latency (20–40ms) is higher than fibre (under 10ms) but far lower than traditional geostationary satellite (600ms+). Download speeds are competitive with entry-level fibre but less consistent. The key advantage of Starlink is coverage — it reaches areas where fibre infrastructure doesn't exist and won't for years.

What equipment does Starlink provide?+

Starlink provides a self-aligning dish antenna (the 'Dishy'), a mounting kit, a WiFi router, and cables. Setup is designed to be DIY-friendly — the dish automatically finds and orients itself towards the Starlink satellite constellation without manual alignment.
